At dawn on Wednesday, – British. naval guns hammered away at Sta- vanger. Stavanger, although a good point for Nazi 'planes to take off from for raiding Britain, is on a plateau, facing the sea and is a good ́target for` naval guns. The only buildings there are hangars and of- fices, the town itself being some miles away.
One of the 'planes of the coastal Command co-operated with the Navy in the bombardment of Stavanger, act- ing as a "spotter."
80-MINUTE BOMBARDMENT Aeroplanes, too, started the opera- tion by dropping flares which lit up the field and by dropping incendiary bombs which started several fires.
The naval guns then opened up, keeping up the bombardment for one
hour and 20 minutes.
German zeroplanes tried to bomb the British warships. One cruiser was hit and slightly damaged, but managed to continue home without help.
A little earlier, the R.A.F. had bomb ed Trondheim, dropping heavy bombs and starting a big fire, whatever other damage they may have caused. They also bombed an adjoining seaplane base. Reuter.
