Force the Hong Kong Police

was charged at the Central Magistracy this morning with desertion.

The man, Harbhajan Singh, 32, was alleged to have deserted on Novem- ber 9, 1939, before the expiration of his five-year term in the Police Force which expires on September 30, 1942.

Accused was arrested on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty, but refused to make a statement unless allowed to do so in camera.

The case was adjourried hours by Mr. R. Edwards.

FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE

SINGAPORE OFFER TO BRITAIN

Singapore, To-day. A resolution, offering £1,000,000 to the British Gov- ernment to aid the prosecu- tion of the war will be moved at the forthcoming meeting of the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements.

The resolution is being put for- ward at the instance of Unofficial members.

Gifts from British Malaya towards the cost of Imperial defence during the past 12 months amount to almost Ma- £3,250,000, apart from special layan war taxation approved a few days ago, the proceeds of which will be offered to the British Government as a contribution towards the cost of the war.

These measures are expected to yield £1,000,000 a year in the Feder- afed Malay States, £500,000 in Straits Settlements and nearly £250,- 000 in the State of Johore.-Reuter.

SHANGHAI, TO-DAY. JAPANESE VOTERS WERE THE FIRST TO VOTE YESTERDAY MORNING AT THE SHANGHAI MUNICIPAL COUNCIL'S ADMINIS- TRATION BUILDING.

Japanese, British and American Ratepayers' Committees have display- ed unprecedented activity, aiming to a full attendance of their secure nationals.

All American ratepayers received telephone calls urging them to vote with offers of free transportation. Every American ratepayer also re- ceived a telegram in the morning re- minding him of his duty to go to the polls.

The unprecedented activities of the British Election Committee will pro-. bably secure votes of more than the usual percentage of British voters. The full results are expected on Friday-Havas.

JAPANESE AIR LINES IN CHINA

The China Aviation Company is shortly inaugurating two new air routes, one from Dairen to Shanghai via Tsingtao and another from Shang- hai via Tsingtao and another from Shanghai to Canton via Formosa.

The new service will be carried out by Douglas planes. Havas.
