A very fair standard resulted from the junior singles semi-final between -Gillies and Wynter-Blyth. The latter was little inferior to Gillies in the matter of stroke equipment and court- craft but the stamina and aggressive- ness of Gillies carried him through to Ratcliffe a decisive victory.

Shaw Blyth took a lead of 7-1 at the out-Megson set, when Gillies could not keep his Parsons. shots on the court, but once he had Denyer settled down to conditions, the ultim- Shipp ate winner could not be stopped.
