PARIS; TO-DAY. THE DEATH OCCURRED YESTER. DAY AT THE AGE OF 98 OF THE

FAMOUS SCIENTIST, M. EDOUARD BRANLY, WHOSE RESEARCH LAID

THE BASIS FOR RADIO RECEPTION

AND PAVED THE WAY FOR MAR-

CONI.

A professor at the Paris Catholic University, he devoted his whole life to science. He held the degrees of Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Physical Sciences and Doctor of Mathematics.

His best-known discovery was that

of "File-dust Coherer," which led to the discovery of the radio reception

tube.

At the end of the last century, he noted that an electrical spark would provoke the agglomeration of file-dust placed in the vicinity of the electric transmitter. The possibility of thus detecting distant electric phenomena attracted his attention and led to the discovery of the principles of wireless transmission..

He will be given a National Funeral,

-Havas.

CO-OPERATE

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")

London, To-day. There is still a lot of talk in London about possible changes in the Cabinet, but no definite decision has yet been announced.

The "News Chronicle" says that if the Labour leaders are invited to take part in the Government they will refuse, just as they did at the begin- |ning of the war.

The "Daily Telegraph," on the other hand, says that important changes and the three men most may come likely to be appointed are Mr. Arthur Greenwood, Deputy Labour Opposi tion Leader, who might get a post in the Admiralty; Mr. Herbert Morrison, Labour M.P., who might go to the War Office; and Mr. A. V. Alexander,

Labour M.P., who might go into the Transport office.

Mr. C. Attlee, the Labour Oppost- tion Leader, might become a Minister without Portfolio, the paper thinks.

The "Daily Telegraph" points out at the same time that the co-operation of these men with the Government would depend on the decision of their Parly. A regular Council session is not due for several weeks, although a special one could be called-if neces- sary, →→ Havas.
