THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE from the Foreign Secretary to the Czech people was broadcast in the Czech news talk last evening.

“To-morrow a year will have passed since the German Fueh- rer, in spite of his most solemn assurances, proclaimed a protectorate over your country and sent his troops to occupy your ancient capital.

By that brutal and treacherous act Herr Hitler destroyed all faith in the pledged word of himself and of his Gov- ernment.

"How disgusting," Miss Mayhew spoke at last, for she had been struck quite dumb. "What shockingly bad form."

"It is with a firm resolve to restore and peoples of the British your freedom that the Governments Empire have taken up arms together with their Allies. It is their high purpose to right the wrongs which you have suffered and to create a new Europe in which the recurrence of such an evil will be made Impossible."

In the course of it he said the Nazi plan, the launching of which was a year ago, to destroy and for ever enslave the Czech nation, had failed.

On that day, March 15, 1939, the whole world realized that ever since 1933 they had dealt with a Germany ruled by cynical and mendacious perjurers, co-operation with whom was impossible.

"In my opinion Nazism had to bring about war under any circum- stances.

"To-day it is generally recogniz- ed that due to our sacrifice and to our present day suffering Europe has gained a whole year to pre- pare itself for the unavoidable at- tack of this aggressor:"

NAZI TERRORISM

Dr. Benes recalled the horrors which followed upon the entry of Nazi troops into Czecho-Slovakia and stated that the numbers of Czechs arrested and gaoled in concentration camps ran into scores of thousands. Thousands had died as a result of violence and · many hundreds had been tortured in the most inhuman manner and brutally executed.

At the same time, Dr. Benes said the Nazi regime had started to plun- der their lands in an incredible man- ner,

"It has destroyed and confiscat- ed our industry and agriculture. It destroys, our forests and our lands. It has robbed our national bank and destroyed our financial resources; and attempted to lay their hands on everything We had abroad.

They try to exterminate our cul- ture, literature, theatre and music."

Dr. Benes concluded. with words of encouragement to his countrymen and with the conviction that the day of Allied victory, which would mark the return to Czecho-Slovakia of freedom was not far away --British Wireless
