CHRIS MOLLER

·NOT COMING

Although it has been reported that Mr. C. B. Moller will be down here for the Annual Race Meeting, which opens to-morrow, it is now learned he is definite- ly not coming, thus leaving his elder brother Mr. R. B. "Boojle" Moller to take care of his father's ponies.

NCE again we are on the eve of another Annual Race Meeting, and arrangements for the 1940 Carnival, which will open to-morrow at the Valley, having been com- pleted, it now remains for the weather to bestow its bless- ing on what may be regarded as the oustanding sporting out between Ascot Day and Australian event of the year. A great deal of attention has been lav-moving animals, and it will not sur- ished on the track, which is in splendid condition, and due to its dry state it is reasonable to expect that fast times will be recorded.

The first saddling bell will be rung at 11.30 a.m. and the tiffin interval will be taken after the fourth race. The stage is all set, and there is every reason to believe that this year's meeting will be conducted under most satisfactory conditions.

Confusion Bay (Mr. D. Black). Eve of Harvest (Mr. F. Marshall). Just in Time (Mr. B. L. Tao). Navylight (Mr. Moller).

Red Feather (Mr. P. Wel). Judging from its win in the Hong Kong Autumns Champions (11⁄4 Miles) Confusion Bay should not experience much difficulty in scoring the first win of the meeting. Good as Navy. light and Eve of Harvest are, and un- der the expert control of Messrs. Moller and Marshall respectively, I don't think they will be able to make any impression on Confusion Bay, which is really a different pony as compared with the time when it first made its appearance.

RACE NO. 2:

HANDICAP: SIX FURLONGS:

This race is confined to "A" Class Australian ponies classified as at 31st.. December, 1889, and will probably at- tract the following starters:--

A Great Time (Mr. B. L. Tao.) -: Courting Eve (Mr. H. C. Pih) Criffel (Mr. Needa). Devonian (Mr. D. Black). Double Finesse (Mr. S. L. Yuen.)

Racylight (Mr. Moller.) Victoria (Mr. Howell.) White Diamond (Mr. Pih). Xenophon (Mr. S. C. Liang). After the ensy manner in which Racylight recently polished off a re- cent mile gallop, I look to it to win this race.

prise me to see the record for this distance lowered. Albury comes next,

but I am inclined to look on this pony as being inore suited to longer dis- tances, Powerful Kid is not bad, and

it may do well later on, and the same remarks apply to Many Thanks and Nancy Lee.

The following will probably line up: Craigavad (Mr. C. Encarnacao). Distinctive Time (Mr. P. Wel). Eve of Dancing (Mr. Marshall). Gretber (Mr. Grams).

Mount Hope Bay (Mr. Black), O-Lan (Mr. Ndeda). Satinlight (Mr. R. B. Moller). Spicylight (Mr. C. B. Moller).

In my opinion the finish will be fought out between Mount Hope Bay, Salinlight and Spicylight. Satinlight has been consistently trained for long distances and with Mr. "Boojie" Moller in control it is strongly fancied to win. I think it will meet with strong op- position from Spicylight, its stable mate, which is quite capable of win- ning, in view of its recent track work when it covered the mile in 2.02.0. Mount Hope Bay should, however, not be left out of the reckoning.

RACE NO. 8: SYDNEY MAIDEN STAKES: (SECOND SECTION) SIX FURLONGS:

I expect to see the following facing the starter:-

Catterick Bridge (Mr. Needa). Circe (Mr. S. W. Tang). Contact (Mr. Davis).

Grand Allegiance (Mr. H. C. Pih). Jungle Princess (Mr. S. L. Yuen). Maple Star (Mr. S. W. Pan). Pumelo (Mr. Proulx). Sapper (Mr. Marshall). Venus Bay (Mr. Black). Viceroy (Mr. L. B. Chao).

The ponies to watch here are: Con- tact, Grand Allegiance, Maple Star, Sapper and Viceroy. Sapper under I nominate Australian Diamond to Mr. Marshall is greatly fancied, al- win, with Ascot Day second and Although it has not shown up to any

marked extent in training. But, on the other hand, Viceroy has done a good gallop over the Derby distance, and on that account it is sure to at- tract a large number of followers. Grand Allegiance also should have something to say at the finish, while Contact is quite fast over sprint dis- tances, and is quite capable of ex- tending the others. I nominate Sapper to win, with Viceroy second and Grand Allegiance third. RACE NO. 9: CURRAGH HANDICAP (SECOND SECTION) FROM the TWO MILE POST ONce round AND IN:

| RACE NO. 5: CURRAGH HANDICAP (FIRST SECTION) FROM THE TWO MILE POST once round AND IN: This race is confined to "C" Class ponies classified as at 31st. December, 1939. Commencement Bay (Mr. S. C. Liang) has been given top weight of 108 lbs., and this should prove a severe handicap. With Rose Finna not enter- ed, Galveston Bay, which suffered de- feat from the former in the Last Chance Handicap, stands a good chance of winning. Boolat Bay (Mr. B. L. Tao) will probably take second place, with Rose-Queen" ~ (Mr. Encarnacao) third. which ran second to Strathbannock in the same race, has had its weight reduced by 10 lbs, and may do better. this time. Then there is Sylvandale (Mr. Hearne), which is very lightly treated, and it may cause an upset here. Taking everything into consi- Au-deration, I think Strathbannock should second win, with Advancing Time and Guinness Time third.

RACE NO. 10: SYDNEY MAIDEN STAKES (THIRD SECTION) SIX FURLONGS: The last race of the day, will be contested by the third lot of new Australian ponies. I need only refer in to ponies that have done well morning training, and I believe that the winner will come from one of the following:-

A Grand Time (Mr. P. Wel). Baffin Bay (Mr. Hearne). Chiltern (Mr. Encarnacao). Lucky Lad (Mr. Needa). Triumphant Day (Mr. B. L. Tao). Winfred (Mr. H. C. Pih). For its win in the Queensland tuinn Champlons, A Grand Time has been penalised 13 lbs., but as this pony is very fit at the moment it is quite capable of handling this extra weight and still win. Lucky Lad is undoubtedly the most dangerous pony here, and provided Mr. Needa does not make his challenge too late this combination may win. There is also Triumphant Day to be considered, especially with only 145 lbs. to carry, Clember has the appear-and with Mr. Tao, its original jockey, ance of a fast-moving animal, and I in control. Baffin Bay, since coming think it will give Racylight a good in second to A Grand Time in the fight, with Dupont Bay as the other Champions, is up 5 Ibs, and I think one to form the opposition,

the best it can do here is to take third place. I expect to see A Grand, Time win, with Lucky Lad, second and Baf- fin Bay third.

I expect to see the finish in the fol- lowing order: Racylight, Dupont Bay and Clember.

RACE NO. 4; SYDNEY MAIDEN STAKES (FIRST SECTION) SIX FURLONGS: Judging from training performances, I regard the following as about the best in this section:-

Albury (Mr. C. Encarnacao). "Ascot Day (Mr. L. B. Chao).

Australian Diamond (Mr. B. L. Tao).

RACE NO. 7: TRIAL PLATE: 11⁄4 MILES: This is the first leg of the "Daily Double," ́ and the result will serve as a guide towards picking the ultimate winner of the Derby. I doubt whether Burford will make an appearance, its owner probably preferring to reserve I it for the big race on Monday.

Cheerful Star (Mr. S. W. Pan). Connieber (Mr. L. B. Chao). Far View (Mr. H. C. Pih). Sea Jay (Mr. Proulx). Sparrow (Mr. P. Wei). Vanity Fair: (Mr. Hearr®).

I consider. Far View to be the best here, and in my estimation it should win comfortably, with Sea Jay and Sparrow fighting it out for the other position. I must state, however, that Cheerful Star is coming along nicely, and for-those who are prepared to take the chance, a bet each way may turn out profitably. I also recommend Connleber for attention.
