Lord Tweedsmuir is generally considered to be the most suc- cessful Governor-General of re- cent times. His extensive travels gave him an intimate knowledge and unusual understanding of Canadian problems, while his friendly, gracious attitude won him the people's hearts.
Official circles respected hlm for his ceaseless vigilance in the. performance of his duties, which advanced good feelings between Canada and the Mother Country.
Lord Tweedsmuir, who recently inodestly expressed the hope that his term of office had contributed something towards Canada's des- tiny as a great nation, was a firm advocate of "Canadianism."
In an address in Montreal in 1937, he said:-
"Canada cannot take her atti- tude to the World in a docile manner from Britain, the United States or anybody else.
"A Canadian's first loyalty is not to the British Commonwealth of Nations but to
Canada." Reuter.
Montreal, To-day.
An official bulletin signed by five doctors states that Lord Tweedsmuir died at 00.13 G.M.T. He was unconscious towards the end.
It is revealed that he was giv- en blood transfusions before and *_after_the_last operation,..........which
lasted for four hours.
As a last resort, respiration was used, but without success.
The news of his death was an- nounced to the whole nation im- mediately by wireless, the Cana- dian Broadcasting Corporation network abruptly stopping શ comedy programme and substitut- ing religious music after the an- nouncement, of his death.
Lady Tweedsmuir left the hos- pital, with head bowed, accom- panied by her son, Alastair, and a lady-in-walting. She embraced the nurse who accompanied her to the car-Reuter.
