A COMMUNIQUE REFERRING to Thursday's activities says there was a heavy artillery action on the Karelian Isthmus.
"During the day the enemy dropped a number of parachute patrols, many of whom were taken prisoner and others killed."

The United States Ambassador, Mr. Nelson T. Johnson, is expect- ed to present a demand for the opening of the Yangtse up Hankow, when he meets the Ja- panese Minister-at-Large, Mr. Ka- to, an his return to Shanghai from Hankow in a few days, according to the China News Agency, the Wang Ching-wei agency.
The agency adds that conse- quently the date for re-opening of the Yangtse and the extent of the navigable area now depend on the outcome of the meeting.
The agency quotes local obser- vers as stating that re-opening of the lower Yangise alms at the readjustment of Japan-American relations, and is a steppingstone to a new commercial pact-Reuter.
Yunnanfu, To-day. More than 100 persons, includ- ing about 10 foreigners, were killed and injured when Japan- ese aircraft yesterday bombed a bridge situated about 83 kilo- metres from the French Indo- China border, on the French rail- way connecting Haiphong with Yunnanfu.
Twenty-seven Japanese planes participated in the raid, which resulted in the destruction of a north-bound train.
Baveral Frenchman, whether pas- sengers or employses of the rail- way, are believed to be among the casualties. --
The majority of those who perished were killed either by bombs or by boiling water from the destroyed engines.
Officers and men of the British gunboats Gannet and Falcon, who left their ships at Chungking some time ago on being recalled home for service, had a narrow
escape.
Their train was bound from Yunnanfu to the French Indo- China border and was not very far from the bridge when the Japanese started bombing.
After the raid, officers and sailors worked untiringly for hours succouring the wounded and dying.
The present of naval doctors from the two British gunboɑta proved especially helpful.
Traffic on the line has been brought to a complete standstill as the wreck of the train is blocking the tunnel Reuter.
The whole of Shek Kit Ming village, in New Kowloon, was destroyed by fire during the night in one of the most devas- tating outbreaks for some years.
Threa hundred houses werd burned to the ground and it is es- timated that nearly 3,000 men. women and children were render- ed homeless.

Shek Kit Ming was a large vä- lage on the Taipo Road soon after passing the fork.
It is, however, nearly three- quarters of a mile from the near- est water-main and as a result the Fire Brigade were helpless until auxiliary pumps were brought up and it was possible to pump water from wells and streams near the village.
The fire started shortly after midnight and raged unchecked, sweeping from house to house, until every building without ex- ception Was involved. Control was not established until after 4 a.m. when the whole place was gutted, only an occasional wall here and there remaining upright. The village was still smouldering at 10.30 a.m. to-day.
The 3,000 villagers with such belongings us they were able to save are lining the Taipo Road and hillside just under the Talpo Road to the north of the de- vastated village.
