WHERE TO LET THE CHIPS FALL

One thing, sometimes overlook- ed by the golfer in sizing up a short chip shot to the green, is the condition of the turf, i.e., wet or dry. If dry, a long roll is pos- sible and the golfer can devote his attention to finding a smooth spot ahead on which to place the ball so that its normal run will bring it close to the cup. Of course the roll will vary according to hardness of the turf, the smooth- ness of the terrain and other qual- ities but sodden grass is never conducive to a long rolling ball. Faced with such a quality, the player must choose a spot a great deal nearer the hole and loft the ball to this spot. It is impossible to give any definite formula as to how far the ball will roll under these various circumstances. Also impossible is just how far back to take the club in the chip shot. Only a short swing is necessary and this shotild; be made, as smoothly and crisply as possible. Next Article-Bunker Faar.
