The Italian authorities have ordered 12 military TERMS
aeroplanes to search for the missing people. It is still hoped that they may have been picked up by French ships known to have been near the scene of the disaster.
When 48 were landed of Marseilles from a French auxiliary cruiser, it was stated that more were expected during the day.
First arrivals tell of a sudden ex- plosion which caused the fire; the lat-

Most of the survivors were taken off by the Italian ships Conte Bian- camaño, on her way to Genoa from Hong Kong. and Colombo, and only two of the ship's lifeboats were launched.
