T is now getting close to the time for the Inter-Unit Novices' Boxing Competition and full particulars have already been circulated.

The competition is being held at Murray Barracks on the 5th, 6th, and 8th of February, 1940, with the fol- lowing units taking part:— ·

Royal Artillery.

Royal Engineers.

The Royal Scots..

The Middlesex Regiment. Combined Small Units.

There is a possibility that there may also be a team from the various de- tails in Hong Kong. -

а

The programme is likely to be big one if entries come up to expecta- tions and a very attractive list has been arranged. A heavyweight contest at catchweight heads the bills, but I hope that there is more attraction in this event this year than last, when entries were extremely low.

competition In the Middleweight there will be three strings from each contests unit, and the welterweight

In will see four strings taking part. the Lightweight events three fighters will represent each unit and in the

two. featherweight division,

The will light-heavy and bantamweights only be represented by one fighter from each unit.

No doubt between now and the big date there will be many boxers seen taking the same care of their figures as a modern miss and doing their best to get that extra pound of superfluous flesh off before going to the scales.

A good manager 1s halt victory with a boxer, and the lucky ones who have exceptional trainers as well, who can reduce their charge without weakening him, are almost certain to give the best value in the ring.

.

Exceptions are always cropping up of course who can do little or no training and enter the ring as fit as the next man, but there is no doubt that 90 per cent.. of a victory is con- tributed before the boxer ever steps into the ring.
