BADMINTON NOTES
INTERESTING MATCHES IN COURSE OF WEEK University “A” With Practice Should Retain Title
H. F. CHEW IS A
DEFINITE FIND
(By “ADREM”)
FROM BADMINTON MATCHES I have seen in the -course of the week, two facts appear to me to have been es- tablished. First is that University “A” are likely to retain the Senior title; second is that King's College are not likely to win the Junior Championship, despite an excellent start.
Most games went as expected and for the first time for some weeks, matches were played in all divisions of the League.
and S. C. Leong won the other, W. II. Choy and S. 9. Li being beaten in all their en- gagements.
In "A" Division, University's vic-to form Chung Wah's first string, but only succeeded in winning one game. C. F. Chiu tory was not unexpected. What was surprising, however, was the ease with which they beat Recreio, who in previous seasons, have always given them an extremely hard fight what ever the state of the League.
This match indicates the vast disparity in
standard between "A" and "B" Divisions,
as University "B" cannot be rated higher than about fourth in the senior division.
THE MIXED LEAGUE
There is little that can be said about
Although there were a couple of very good games, for the most part the standard of badminton served up was disappointingly | Friday's Mixed Doubles Kame. - Kowloon poor. The Recreio players, while they have had quite a fair amount of practice, were never able to touch top form, and the Uni- versity stars have had their badminton In- terrupted by examinations and have yet to get their games into full working order.
I have seen Hul and Yong play on two
Cricket Club gallantly carries 01, trying very hard but losing consistently. At best they can hope to build up their team with an eye to the future but it is hardly likely that the fruits of this polley will be appar ent before next season.

QUESTION, OF PSYCHOLOGY
This state of affairs is not good enough, os, against a team like Chinese "Y"-now their only challengers for honours-who are evidently in full practice and as keen as mustard, they cannot afford to drop an early game As they did against Recreio.

not play against Recrefo and is not down to play to-night.
In this place. J. L. Anderson, whose com- bination with Miss Madge Griffiths in the old days was the most powerful in the Co- lony, has yet to win a game with Miss Stokes, Anderson is a much better mixed player than he is at the, men's game and Miss Stokes should benefit a great deal from
her association with him.
-Success or defeat in the first game of the evening often decides a match owing to the psychological effect on the lesser lights in "B" DIVISION
the team.
On Monday. Oliveira and A. M. Silva struck such brillant form right from the start that Hul and Yong were made to look silly! And I mean just that! They were most difficult to recognise as the pair which had won the doubles title of the Colony last
-season.
Undoubtedly they did appear to be wor- ried by the conditions, although the Recreio .court in the matter of lighting and back- ground is probably the best in the Colony at the moment, and they were up against -Oliveira in his most devastating mood.
He could do amashed with all his old vigour and rushed about the court making impossi- ble returns in a manner typical of a couple of seasons back.
nothing wrong. Не
Silva played some very canny shots at the net and was almost invariably in position for a "kili.**
Carvalho and Remedios also got away to A flying start against P. S. Bun and M. 8. Lim but they flattered ontv to deceive. The University pair were bewildered in the early stages by Recreio's whirlwind tactics and not until they were down 8-13 did they really start to assume an ascendancy. Des- pite all that Carvalho and Remedios could do thereafter they were unable to stop the University run of success and after levelling at 15, Bun and Lim went out without á great: deal more trouble.
Pereira and It was not expected that Gonsalves would do very much and they didn't! They were unable to secure more than 14 aces in any one game.
CHEW IS GOOD
I was very favourably impressed with the performance of H. F. Chew. I had heard great things said of him and he was not over-rated. His combination with C. K. Lee, who is playing much better now than he did last season. is a good one and University can now be considered
KING'S
FALTER; RECREIO REVIVAL
(By "ADREM")`
With every reason to feel discour- aged following their trouncing at the hands of St. John's, Recreio "B" made a great comeback on Wednesday even- Ing to beat King's in a most thrilling finish by the odd game.
It was a really fine effort and has done a good deal to restore to the team the faith themselves that St. John's all but in
wrecked.
In yesterday's article I dealt with the pro- gress of the games in the final stages and I see no purpose in repetition.

University have lost the services of two Misses of their championship team, the.
Joyce Anderson but Josephine Choa and Misa Uheng Khoo and Miss J. Hung are of give good accounts useful and should themselves.
Recreio will be sádly weakened by the ab- sence of Miss Marie Ribeiro but Mrs. A. C. Remedios, who is taking her place, is an experienced player and can be relied upon lo give C. C. Pereira every support.
It is difficult to forecast the result but having, regard to the superiority of the Re- crelo ladies, I am inclined to the belief that the King's Park team will win, al- though it is not likely that the margin will be more than the odd game.
Match between Taikoo and K.C.C. been postponed.

AN APPEAL
I have only just been able to secure the "A" Division detailed score of the other match, between University "B" and Chung -Wah.
In this connection would repeat an appeal, made to club secretaries at tha' beginning of the season to send in their scores where it has been Impossible to send anyone for them.
