SINGAPORE IMPORTS OF H.K. GOODS: PRESENT REQUIREMENTS EXPLAINED

AIR ACTIVITY AT THE FRONT

Paris, To-day.

A fresh outburst of air ac- tivity occurred yesterday on the western front, where cold dry weather brought excel- lent visibility.

Planes took to the air in

large

numbers on both sides and engaged | principally in reconnoitring and pho- tographic missions over the front, with fighter aircraft giving the necessary protection.

The Germans also made several long • distance reconnaissance flights over northern and eastern France, as well as day flights to- warda the East Coast of Britain. It is believed that the object of these night flights was the laying of magnetic mines. Reuter.

WITH REFERENCE to the restriction of some im- ports from Hong Kong, and the prohibition of other imports, enforced by the authorities of Bri- tish Malaya as an exchange protection measure because Hong Kong is outside the sterling bloc, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce has now received further information on the subject.

In

a semi-official communication it is stated that, provided abuses do not creep in, restricted im- ports from Hong Kong will still continue at prob- ably not much below. 1938 figures.

RE-EXPORTS NOT AFFECTED Even in respect of goods which are unregulated entirely importera in Malaya are furnishing particulars to the Government Department and ap- plications are endorsed “Unregulated,' so that subsequent exchange control and import are facilitated.

In addition, goods even though on the prohibed list may be im- ported freely they are for re-export elsewhere outside Malaya provided that a form of guarantee, which is well-known to importers, is lodged at the time of submitting the order.

The descriptions of prohibited and restricted goods appearing in the Straits Settlements Gazette of 17th November are drawn in rather wide terms, and it is only possible to ascer- tain which particular articles are in- cluded by reference to the code num- bers which are given against such descriptions and comparing them with the corresponding code numbers given to items in the monthly volume of the Malayan statistics. In cases of doubt, reference should also be made to detailed lists, given in the Feder- pted Malay States Government Gazette of 27th November.
