Soviet Massing Large Forces For New Onslaughts
BIG OFFENSIVE FORESHADOWED
London, To-day.
FINNISH CIRCLES IN LONDON state that the Rus- sians have concentrated "astonishingly large masses of troops" on the Salla and Lake Kianta fronts.
Hence the Finns expect to face new onslaughts there
shortly.
In Helsinki yesterday, a Finnish communique stated that on the Karelian Isthmus the day was rela- tively quiet, apart from the usual artillery and patrol activity.
The Russians continue to strengthen their defences.
On the Suomussalmi front Fin- nish troops have reached the frontier and have cleared the area of enemy troops.
This is the fourth point where the invaders who crossed the frontier were thrown back onto Russian soil.

AIR MARSHAL BARRATT TAKES

London, To-day.
GERMANS TO BE PAID IN I.O.U.'S
Berlin, To-day.
Some indication of the ad- ditional taxation the German people will have to shoulder is now disclosed in the Ger- man press. The sum of £5,000,000,000 a
year will have to be squeezed out of the people and there has been much speculation as to what methods will be used.
It is certain, however, that an extra tax of 9.16 per cent. on 1939 Incomes will be claimed and this, the "Deutsche Allegemeine Zeitung" points out, will bring the maximum tax for the first period up to 64.16 per cent.
It is possible that German workers will have part of what wages they have left paid in the form of IO.US. This is revealed by the "Schwarze Korps, "which adds that the exact form of these 1.0.U. notes has not yet been decided. Reuter.

Continuing his final address, Potter quoted a number of authorities in suport of his contention that there was no duty on the part of plaintiffs to tell defendant that the mortgages were forgeries because they were to- tal strangers.
He also submitted that on the evi- dence defendant had lost no right of action against Chan Chung-wah, the alleged forger.

It is pointed out that unity of control is considered an advantage as all available air forces can be used in the best way according to the course of events.
There is no question of the B.E.F. receiving any less support from the air. and in practice the excellent co- operation between the Army and Air Force will not be affected.
CLOSE COLLABORATION
It may be emphasised that Air-Mar- shal Barratt and General Lord Gort, the British commander-in-chief, will not only work in the closest col- laboration but will have responsibility of equal importance for successful prosecution of the war on the West- ern Front.

Stockholm, To-day. Swedish concern over So- viet aggression on Finland was expressed in two quar- ters on Tuesday night.
The Swedish Parliament passed a -series-of-emergency measures which are applicable in the event of war or the threat of war.
The chief
