SATISFACTORY SPIRIT IN LOCAL BADMINTON Few Postponements; The Game For The Game's Sake
OLIVEIRA AND MISS M. RIBEIRO PLAY WELL
(By “ADREM”)
LEAGUE badminton continues to go steadily along and clubs are to be congratulated on the splendid manner
in which they have responded to the appeal addressed to
them by the Hon. Secretary of the Association at the be- ginning of the season to the effect that they make every ef- fort to play off their fixtures as arranged.
There have been one or two unavoidable postponements --as is inevitable in this day and age-but in practically every case the earliest opportunity has been taken to play these off.
Frank Kwok played fairly well throughout and it was not through lack of trying that he did not meet with success.
A particularly pleasing feature has been the absence of unjustified post- ponements. That is, games postponed because clubs are unable to turn out their strongest possible team, and, while this spirit of playing the game for the game's sake, and not for what is to be won at it, persists, the future of badminton in this Colony is ascessive matches will undoubtedly give her.

Their display at Recreio against the in the Colony, best-balanced team was a fairly notable one although they only managed to win two games.
Taken all round, however, the badminton that night provided nothing over which to enthuse. I have rarely seen the Recreio team play in such an uninspired manner,
OLIVEIRA PLAYS WELL
Marcus Oliveira nevertheless gave the lie to those who have been inclined to rate him as a has-been. He played quite as well as he has ever done. Not allowing the reputa- tion of the Eardleys to worry him to any extent, he was at his best in this game. amashing with great power and accuracy and showing all his old ability to pick up apparently unreturnable shots.
Miss M. Ribeiro was quietly consistent and it was her unobtrusiveness which en- abled Oliveira to race about the court. con- fident that he would not be thrown off his balance by a last-minute stab by his partner.

STRENGTH OF ST. JOHN'S
(By "ADREM")
There was a bit of a mix-up in the case of one club on Wednesday, when a full programme of "B" badminton matches was played. A. E. H. Castro, representative of Kowloon Tong, not having kept his fixture-list up to date, was under the impression that his team was down to play St. John's. Actually the latter club played Recreio and by virtue of their 9-0 win, have eslab- lished themselves more firmly than ever as strongest challengers to King's.
Only other team that might be in at the death is St. Teresa's, who, however, have already lost once, to King's.
It was at one time thought that Recreio would have a good deal to say as regards the ultimate destination of the shield but after their performance on Wednesday I can enly conclude that I have over-rated' them.
Some idea of the type of game that Eard- lay played against Recreio will be appre- ciated from the fact that Beavan, who was the weakest of the six St. John's players on view on Wednesday, in a previous match, against K.C.C., dropped a game when part- nered with Frank Kwok.
The K.C.C. team. is not to be compared with the side that St. John's had out and so it may be taken for granted that the 'usual weak third pair, which St. John's have had to carry for the past two seasons, is now a thing of the past, and, with this new balance, they can be expected to go from strength to strength.
FINDING TRUE FORM
Ernie Fincher, and Henry Kew now appear to have settled down into something like their true form. They were the only St. Andrew's pair who did not drop a game to J. L. Anderson and A. L. Fisher of Kowloon Cricket Club on Wednesday.
Gillies and Guest, and Brown and Bliss both won' two games and it is to be hoped that this, their first success, will encourage the Saints to steadily improved perform- ances.
Spitting up A, L. Fisher and Wynter-Blyth "In an effort to distribute-their-strength,-did not weaken the K.C.C. team but it did little to improve it as Fisher and Anderson, who have had consid:rable experience of each other's play in the past, merely did what Fisher. with Wynler-Blyth, have done hitherto
From what I have seen of his play I should imagine that Kevan is rather a dif- Bcult person to play with in that he tries too many fancy shots and in so doing serves up a great deal of loose stuff. i
If K.C.C. really wish to develop a better second string. I feel that pairing Wynter- Blyth with T, A. Madar would be more ef- fective: Madar is apt to take a long time to settle down but having done so he jmer- ally knows what to do. He has a good smash and some nice angle-shots which ha knows when and when not to bring into operation.
Although one or two of the games were quite hard-fougat. St. Teresa's ¿were never In any real, trouble against V.R.C.," whom they beat for the loss of one game. John „Tang made, his first appearance for Church club in partnership with Austin Ho "and" won two games","

Nevertheless St. „Turasa's appear to be tij. advised to experiment with their third pair. #Joseph Lam, played with Austin Ho in a pr vious game in the place of W. Ulrich, who ls on the injured hat, and did fairly well. If Ulrich is likely to be out of the game for ́any length of time I feel that $1, would be advised, to, work, up combination.
