GERMAN MYSTERY YACHT
A PRIZE OF WAR
London, To-day. THE ELVIRA III, a German mystery yacht condemned this week as legal prize of war, tugs at her anchor chain in a Thames Estuary creek and awaits a buyer under order of the British Prize Court. Her German crew of two are in an internment camp and Thames yachtsmen are congratulating themselves that their suspicions appear to have been justified. It was through them that police swooped on the yacht and seized her.
.The Elvira slipped into the river last August and anchored. The two Germans--one aged about 45 was called Herr Doktor by his younger comrade-did not talk much. They said they had sailed from Kiel "Just for pleasure."
The fact, and the large number of letters which arrived for them bear- ing German postmarks, aroused sus- picions.
They invited no one on board which is unusual, for yachtsmen of all nations are good mixers and like to yarn about their cruisers.
Even when war seemed imminent, the mystery sailors stayed on. They said the weather was blowing up badly.
CREW INTERNED
Eventually one of the local yachts- men told the police of the suspicions. There are several important build- ings along the waterfront, and the Germans were in an ideal position to watch shipping movements.
The next day Special Branch off- cers boarded the Elvira. After 籍 talk with the crew they towed the yacht up-river. It was learned later that the crew had been interned.- Our Own Correspondent.
