Germany Releases British Diplomat on U.S. Pressure

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")

London, To-day. THE GERMAN AUTHORITIES have released Mr. George Gordon Vereker, Chancellor of the Bri- tish Embassy at Moscow, who was made prisoner by a German cruiser in the Baltic while going to Britain in a neutral vessel.

Mr. Vereker is at present on the way to England. The American Embassy in Berlin, which has assum- ed the defence of British interests, insisted on the diplomat's release. - Havas.

Amsterdam, To-day.

A description of his detention by the Nazis was given to the Oslo cor- respondent of the "Amsterdam Tele- granf" by Mr. Vereker.

Mr. Vereker said he wanted to go to England via Riga, Sweden and Norway, and had therefore booked his passage by an Estonian boat which was taking 75 Pollsh refugees to Sweden.

Although the imprisonment was unpleasant he said his situation was agreeable as possible under the cir- cumstances.

SIR ARCHIBALD CLARK-KERR, British Ambassador in CHINA, will reach Chungking in the next 10 days on one of his periodical visits.

In Chungking he will discuss current questions with the Chinese Government, including various suggestions for solution of the Tientsin issues. No agreement on these issues has yet been reached between the British and Japanese Governments.
