DECEPTION
The "Statue of Liberty" play in Bridge occurs when a notrump De- clarer deliberately leads the suit he is afraid of, hoping the opponents will now steer clear of it. This was the case in a recent hand played by Mr. Harold Colvin of New York City:

hearts, while at the same time he could count but eight tricks for himself. His only really good play for a ninth trick would oc- cur if one of his op- ponents could be per- suaded to lead a spade. Accordingly, Mr. Colvin promptly led the seven of hearts from his hand.. West played the King and now East, who saw what was going on, scream- ed för a heart lead by playing the Queen.

my, East played the Jack and Declarer won with the King. Now, after running his five club tricks, Mr. Colvin suc- cessfully finessed for the Queen of spades to make his contract.
"Partner, didn't you see me signal with the Queen of hearts?" East de- manded, whereupon. West replied, "I thought it was a singleton.”
East had no reply to this, but we may point out that if East really had a singleton heart, it would mean that Declarer had seven of them, in which case we really feel he would have shown the suit at some stage of the bidding.

Unfortunately, West was one of those quick players. Even before his part- ner's play to the trick he had his hand on the four of spades, and it came right out. Mr. Colvin played low from dum- | Ind.)

By BEST BALL
The efficient manner with which MacDonald Smith used to raise his brassie shots off the turf, contact- ing the ball solidly yet hitting it smoothly without digging into the ground, held the admiration of all golfers. Smith's swing was grooved and accurate that this was no great feat for him but the idea is recommended for all golfers.

Bobby Cruickshank advises players to follow a similar rou- tine on brassie shots, playing the ball cleanly and thus avoiding a possible flubbed shot by trying to dig for the ball. As the clubhead comes onto the ball, snap the club- head through with the wrists, starting at a point about a foot before impact. This can be ac- complished by increasing the -speed of the right hand at this spot. For stroke, precision it is essential that the stance be firm and solid.
