INEXPENSIVE SATISFYING

THE ISLAND TRIAL RUN

WITH SOME 50 TO 60 PEOPLE on board, comprising her crew and a large number of European and Chinese guests, Hong Kong's super-luxury junk Cheng Ho went on her official trials around the Island of Hong Kong yesterday.

Both sail and her two Diesel en- | handled on her trials. All those who gines were used, the latter being nec- cessary because of the general lack of wind. This was all to the good. perhaps, because the engine, with their range of 2,000 miles, are one of the chief "safety factors" of the Cheng Ho.

The course of the trial ran from Ah King's Slipway, off Causeway Bay, round through Lyemoon Pass, along south coast of the Island (including a detour into lovely Repulse Bay), through the East Lamma Channel, past Green Island and back to the anchor- age through Hong Kong Harbour,

VISIT OF M.T.B. Through the courtesy of Mr. Thomus Kilkenny, the bluff, hearty skipper of the junk, a "China Mail" representa- tive accompanied the Cheng Ho on her trials.

He found the Cheng Ho a thorough ly seaworthy and comfortable craft. It is a tribute to Mr. Kilkenny's skill os designer and boat-builder that only one or two small "defects," if one might call them such, came to light, and these can be easily remedied be- fore the craft sails.

The trial was not without incident, however. At one stage when the breeze had practically died down and the engine were being checked over, a naval M.T.B. bore down on the junk at high speed and stopped along- side. Her commander informed those on board that the Cheng Ho was right over one of the Colony's mine-fields! A pause while everyone took deep

went on the trial yesterday-and they included a number of American and British naval officers and Captain Petersen, of Hong Kong's other famous junk, the "Pan Jin"-shared with them their conviction that Cheng Ho is destined for a happy and safe voy- age via Manila, the Celebes und South Africa to the Bahamas.

Cheng Ho's date of departure has not yet been definitely settled, but the should leave within the next week or ten days. In addition to a large Chinese crew of experienced sailors, she will carry the following:-

Thomas Kilkenny and his nephew, Fenton Kilkennav: Jack Fant; Dan Hubrecht; C. and T. Torre, one of whom will disembark at Manila; Jack Mac- Gruder, son of Commander MacGru- der. U.S.N., who will also disembark at Manila; Mrs. J. Archbold; Mr David Fairchild, who is a member of the U.S.' Department of Agriculture and a direc- tor of the National Geogranhíc Socie- ty, and Mrs. Fairchild; and Mr. Edwin Beckwith, an expert cameraman.

The junk thus has quite a large "passenger" list. Had she been "in business," however, her booking agents could probably have taken on as ad- ditional passengers most of the 60 people who were on the trial yes- terday-including the press represen-

tatives!

breath, and then the M.1.8, ski EUROPEANS

said that it was right. But would the Cheng Ho either go forward or go back?

COULDN'T TAKE IT

A note of comedy was shortly after- wards introduced by the Slipway carpenters, who had come on the trial partly for amusement and partly to finish off a number of minor odd jobs. As the Cheng Ho rose and fell in the swell just outside Lyeemun Pass, these carpenters, one by one, grew green of countenance, abandoned their tools and lay down on the deck in positions of acute misery!

It was not long, indeed, before the Cheng Ho became a veritable "hospi- tal ship," as landlubbers dropped right and left and crawled off into dark corners to die (as they thought). They were all on their feet, again, however, by the time Repulse Bay was reached. On the homeward journey, Cheng Ho dipped her American flag (she is registered at New York) to a British warship, and a cheer went up from those on her poop deck as the British cruiser gallantly returned the salute.

HANDLED WELL

At the head of Cheng Ho's crew are Thomas Kilkenny and Jack Fant (who is on leave from Jardine's,) Both were delighted with the way Cheng Ho

VICTIMISED

Mrs. Koeppen, of No. 28, Lock Road, at about 6.10 p.m. yesterday, either lost or had stolen, a handbag and con- tents valued at $42, in a tramcar in Des Voeux Road Central.

Lieut. Horncastle, R. N., has re- ported that his cabin door was forci- bly opened at about 8 a.m. yesterday, and a sum of $101 stolen.

A motor car No. 3514 belonging to Mr. Calvert, residing at No. 1, Gap Road, was stolen shortly before 1 p.m. yes- terday, from the Connaught Road car park near Queen's Pier.

THE GENTLE ART OF "SCROUNGING"

Two coolies were fined $5 or seven day's imprisonment, by Mr. T. J. Houston this morning, for stealing grapes, the property of Getz Brothers.

They were alleged to have opened boxes of fresh grapes, in a lane at Bridges Street, and removed grapes from each box entrusted to them for delivery.
