NAVY'S HUNT FOR THE POCKET BATTLESHIPS

London, To-day.

IN A REVIEW OF THE WAR at sea, the BBC Naval Obser- ver said yesterday that when Germany built her three pocket battleships, she designed them as commerce raiders which could beat off a cruiser and run away from a battleship. They can steam 20,000 miles with- out refueling almost right around the world. Discussing the difficulties of finding these ships, he asked how many ships were actually seen on, say, a trip from Britain to New Zealand?

A ship at sea was almost blind, he caught. The ships of the British and, said. At night, visibil- ity was only a couple of miles-for raiders travel without lights,

MAGNETIC MINES

Turning to mines, the Naval Ob- server said that at first the Nazis had a certain amount of success with their magnetic mines, Yet the blockade is more frightful than effec- tive. British ports are still open and the mine-sweeping fleet has been strengthened and re-organized to meet the menace.

A ship in those circumstances was rather like a man wandering in 冠 thick mist on the Yorkshire Moors. A ship had only to be on the other side of the horizon to be invisible.

In the North Atlantic, where the Rawalpindi met her doom, the posi- tion was even worse. Gales were almost a daily occurrence, there was counter-measures to make the seas only about 3 hours of daylight, and for good measure there were fogs, mists, rain-storms and snow-storms. In such weather, one's quarry could be invisible although she was only a mile or so away.

These minesweeping boats are chiefly manned by volunteers and fishermen, and as an instance of the remarkable qualities . of these men, he told the story of a peace- ful fishing trawler which was shelled at close range by a U-boat.

Recently, several Getman ships had left neutral ports, probably in- tending to supply the raiders. That did not matter now-they had been either captured or scuttled.

Sooner or later, too, the raider's speed and steaming performance suf- fer, particularly in tropical waters, where marine growths are prolific. Machinery, too, develops defects in time which eventually need handl- ing in a dockyard.
