A FOREIGN GORRESPONDENT REPORTS THE FAILURE OF SOVIET MILITARY MANOEUVRE, IN AN ATTEMPT TO BREAK THE FINNISH DEFENCES IN THE LADO- GA AREA.

The much-practised landing of troops by parachute was carried out behind the Finnish lines, the troops being equipped with machine-guns.

Shanghai, To-day. policemen of the "Special Municipality" opened fire on several unarmed British extra- soldiers last night in an Settlement road.

They mortally wounded a Chin- ese woman and arrested one sol- dier and a civilian, also believ- ed to be British.

About 20 rounds of pistol and rifle ammunition was fired by the Municipality police,

Shortly after 10 p.m., the soldier and the civilian were taken to a house occupied by the Spe- cial Municipality police and their Japanese advisors. They were re- leased at 1 a.m. to-day.

The incident began when a party of 15 Municipality police- men broke into a cafe, splintering the front door; they searched all the rooms.

They are said to have found a British soldier, Private Peel, of East Surrey Regiment, and a civi- lian and arrested them.

As they were taking their pri- soners along, a small

group of unarmed British soldiers came out of another cafe and the police- men opened fire on them.

An East Surreys' mechanised patrol at the perimeter and other lorry carrying fully equip- ped soldiers and Bren machine- guns rushed to the scene and took up a position opposite the scene of the shooting.

A large party of Shanghai Mu- nicipal Police came up and later the Municipality force left, leav- ing the scene to the East Surreys and the Settlement police.-Reu- ter.
