SO A HERO DIED ON THE BRIDGE
THIS IS THE STORY of a great hero who, dying, ignor- ed death until he had given his last command and brought his ship safely to port.
This man, of whom the whole Navy is proud to-day, was Commander Richard F. Jolly, victim of the Rosyth raid. To-day can be told the full story of his heroism.
The destroyer Mohawk was returning from patrol when a German bomber dived over her, spraying death- dealing lead along her decks. Men fell right and left.

The Commander's legs were shat- tered. At his feet lay the body of Lieutenant O'Shea, his second command.
Commander Jolly hung on to the rall, taking the weight from his legs. "Open fire," he ordered In firm tones, and the guns spoke. The men who fired them stood among dead and wounded com- rades.

Then the Commander turned to the bridge messenger. "Bring me chair," he said. This was done, and he lowered himself into it.
"BRING HIM DOWN" His features contorted with pain, the gallant officer continued to take command of his ship.
He refused all assistance. "Bring that machine down, bring him down," he shouted. And the sailors, inspired by such magnificent courage, handled their anti-aircraft canny skill.

Commander Jolly manoeuvred Mo. hawk at a speed so that every gun she possessed could be brought to bear on the raider.
A HERO DIES
He had his reward when he saw the German bomber lurch away badly hit. "That's the stuff, boys,” he cried. "Now I'll get the ship home for you." And he did.
As the Mohawk steamed into the dockyard with a mortally wounded man in command, issuing his orders in a voice that was always becoming weaker, naval men hurried to meet her.
No Scottish dockyard has ever witnessed such a scene. Everything was forgotten but this little destroyer and her gallant crew.
FROM THE DOCKSIDE THE WATCHERS SAW THE CAPTAIN FALL QFFICERS AND MEN SALUTED AND THE SHIP'S EN- SIGN LOWERED TO HALF MAST. A NAVAL HERO HAD DIED.

Ambassador Johnson, the American to China yesterday, according to a Shanghai report. He left after half an hour.
According to a secretary of the American envoy, Mr. Kato's visit was in the nature, of a courtesy call. This was the first time that the two diplomats met..
They did not touch on Far Eastern questions.
