Then came the Hong Kong St. Leger, gruelling race over 134 miles, in which four griffins, China ponies of this year. partici- were evenly divided, with not a sin-pated. It was indeed as thrilling a race as gle owner having the satisfaction of has ever been seen on the local track. winning more than one race.
This meeting was marked by a most peculiar feature, ie. three ponies dead- heating for second place in the Shum Chun Handicap (second section), and me correctly, I if memory serves think this has never happened before at the Valley.
The attendance last Saturday was undoubtedly an improvement over the once again, previous meetings, and, the Cash Sweeps were in great de- mand, resulting in the payment substantial returns.

Carrying the maximum load of 163 lbs. Confusion Bay lowered the record for this distance, which was jointly held by Diana Bay and Rose Elect.

In the fifth race, the first section of the Shum Chun Handicap, over one mile, which was also the first leg of the "Daily Double," a surprise was in store. Boolat Bay (Mr. Needa) was made favourite, and at the very tast minute, there was a strong demand for tickets on Rose Fiana (Mr. Encarnacao), Rose Flana, Lovely Star (Mr. Treverton), and Advancing Time (Mr. Ip Kul Ying)' took up the running from the start, with Mr. Needa being satisfied to remain in the rear. After passing the Rock, Rose Fiana gradually dropped back, with Boolat Bay then coming up strongly. Just when it ap

On the other hand, Criffet took command of the race from the start, and despite all Mr. Needa could do on Lucky Lad, Criffel won by the narrowest margin.
The race itself was keenly contested, and' coming into the straight it became a strug-- gle between Criffel, Lucky Lad and Lanca-- shire Chips (Mr. Hearne). Mr. Needa tried' to get through on the rails, whereas Lan cashire Chips made its challenge on the outside. These three fought out the finish amidst great excitement, Criffel winning by a neck, and Lucky Lad having the better of Lancashire Chips by a head.

There was nothing much over which one could enthuse in the last race, the New- castle Handleap for "C" Class Australian' ponies. It was a sprint event, and, carry- ing the most money, Brutus, ridden by Mr. Pih, ran most disappointingly.
