ARMY

HOCKEY TRIAL

there

was

Though, as expected, little combination or understanding in the teams participating in the Army Hockey trial at Sookunpoo yesterday, evident that it was, nevertheless, there was sufficient material for strong side to be chosen to represent Army in the forthcoming triangular and other tournaments.

a

were

Three periods of 20 minutes each

all players were played and given a chance, some in two positions. The games were fast and featured by good individual play, though lack of combination prevented many goals being scored.

None of the goal-keepers were to show opportunties given many their capabilities as they were seldom called on.

Lieut. Hook in the pivotal position, played in all the periods and was the outstanding central-half of the after- noon and the obvious choice for that vosition. Dilmot and Beasley were both seen in the pivotal positions and later as wing halves.

In the first period, Dilmot, as right- half to Hook, gave a good performan- ces, but in the last period, Partab Singh and Marshall, he not do so well.

Beasley, more at home in the cen- at left-half tre-half berth, was seen

in the last period. The slippery state of the ground hampered his display.

Austen, left-half, was consistently good and should earn a place in the team.

HARD-HITTING BACKS

All the backs hit hard and tackled Gusain Singh well, Datta Ram and

being particularly good in the first period, while Hazara Singh and Dai. Shan, also played well.

Major Harvey, in the

centre-for-

he

ward position, was the most danger-

us forward in the two halves played.

Marshall, inside-left, played a good, sound game, passing well to his win- ters and sending through good passes. He was tried on the left-wing in the where he partnered latter stages, Partab Singh, but both appeared out of position.

Partab Singh was in his element on the left wing, where his speed and powerful centring were greatly in evidence. As an inside forward worked hard but was not so effec- tive.

he

Sawal Singh, Pritam Nath, Indarit Singh and Nerain Singh were also on view and the last three should find places in the side.

Homburg of the Engineers, at in- side right, for one period, played well and showed a good turn of speed and clever stickwork.

Only two goals were scored, Hom- the Partab burg and

Singh being

scorers.

Yesterday's trial teams were:
