to which he should contribute to the greatest extent possible.

The effect of the income tax changes is that assessments for payments due on January 1 will be at a standard rate of 7s. in the pound, and the first £135 of taxable income will ხი charged at 2s. 4d. in the pound in- stead of is. 8d., as at present. In 1941 the standard rate will be 7s. 6d. in the pound, and the first £160 will be charged at 3s. 9d. The raising of the Arst part of taxable income to £160

is the one concessioh made. The re- duced allowances, which will not come into effect until next year, will be:

Earned Income allowance, now one-fifth, with maximum of £300, to be one-sixth, maximum £250.

Marriage allowance to be £170 in-

stead of £180.

Allowances for children £50 each instead of £60.

Individuals who have suffered salary reductions of 20 per cent or more will be able to substitute this year's actual income for last year's income as the basis of assessment for the payment due in January.

The extra yield expected from in- come tax is £70,000,000 this year and

£146,000,000 in a full year.

Slacks 'Disgusting'

Women Conservatives of Rich-

mond, Surrey, think the wearing of slacks by their sex "disgusting." They say war is no excuse for it.

At a meeting of the Town Ward branch of the Association, Mrs. A. when she Shadwell was applauded said: "I think it is disgusting for girls to go about like this, and, what is worse, they insist on showing their toes. If they must dress as men, why not wear the whole outfit, with socks and everything else. If men were

It is lowering the prestige of British women."
