JUDGE WILL SEE A PARISH PRIEST

HE WANTS ADVICE ABOUT I.R.A. GIRL

London, Oct. 28. Donnell. "She should be ashamed of herself for being in an organisation like that."

An English soldier-of-fortune who has served in turn with the United States Army, the British Army, and the International Brigade in Spain, and who has at times seen the inside of gaols, was sentenced yesterday to 20 years' penal servitude for taking part in LR.A. bombings.

He is a Manchester seaman, Vincent Crompton, aged 36, and Mr. Justice Stable told him scathingly: "You aren't even Irish."

Crompton was convicted at Liver- pool Assizes with three other men and a girl..

Because of the girl, 19-years-old Jean Dobson, a parish priest will re- ceive an invitation this week-end to meet Mr. Justice Stable. They will talk about her. Her father may also be present.

The three other 1.R.A. men who were standing beside him were, how- ever, hearing his record for the first time.

Christopher Kenneally, aged 19, told the court; "I should like to clear the I.R.A. concerning Cromp- ton. Had any member known his character he would never have been allowed to take part in our activities."

Kenneally was sent to Borstal for three years. John Carney, aged 27, and George Whittaker, aged 30, were each sentenced to seven years' penal servitude.

A fifth man, Terence O'Hanlon, was acquitted after the judge told the jury, "The only evidence against him is that he is Irish and is friendly with

Crompton had pleaded for her. "I used Jean Dobson for the purposes of the I.R.A.," he said. "I want to clear her.

"I had to have a house because it would not be suspicious like a flat. I got Jean Dobson to say she was my wife."

After this Mr. Justice Stable told the jury: "The girl has made statement, but she may have made it to shield Crompton, the man she was fond of."

Jean, whose real name is Margaret McDonnell, refused to give evidence or to call her mother.

But Mrs. McDonnell was called by the judge. She said she knew nothing of her daughter's I.R.A. activities.

"She got into this only through this plausible Crompton," said Mrs. Mc-
