KUMAONS TROUNCE

R. SCOTS

(By GRANDSTAND)

F any generous soul had offered a trophy for the best field- ing average for the past season, the award would have had to be divided among three players-Union Beermen Ma- deen (Perfect Control) Arculli, hurler; centrefielder Stan (Powerhouse) Leonard; and South China's combination At Marina Ground yester-[hind snatcher and outfielder, Szeto Bick. All three fielded day afternoon, Kumaon Rifles a perfect 1.000 per cent.

On top of achieving this fielding feat during the past had no difficulty in defeating

season, Arculli also gained another 1.000 in the won and lost Seaforth's in a friendly foot-percentages, having chalked up nine victories with nary a ball match by five goals to defeat. one after sharing two goals shows a finger's effectiveness, proves The earned-run-average, which

During the first half, the ntatch was quite even. Although Scots were at one period kept on the defensive, valuable work by Hutchins, right back, and Marjiram, centre-half, kept the Indians out.

K: Singh, inside-left, opened the scoring for the Indians but, shortly afterwards, the Scots equalised through Robinson, on the right wing. On resumption, the Scots collapsed very badly and were kept in their own half by the Indians, who, through K. Singh took the lead

The Indians scored their last two goals through F. Singh and K. Singh

Kumaon Rifles:-R. Singh: Llout.. Tarr and T. Singh: B. Singh, M. Singh and J. amicham; S. Singh, P. Singh, F. Singh, K. Singh and R. Pratap.

Arculll gave the fewest free tickets, 6. and also whiffed the most, 48. There were only 15 earned runs credited to his opponents out of the 28 tallies scored against U.B.. and he pitched 41/3 innings more than Spotty Pereira's 62 2/3, Arcullt allowed the most safeties, 62, one more than Pereira.

Back in 1910, Macdonald Smith was in a three way tie for the National Open Championship, along with Alex Smith and J. J. McDermott. In the playoff, the title went to Alex Smith but plenty of praise was heaped on young Macdonald by the experts and fans alike. Neither group was as numerous as golf knows to-day but they managed to make themselves heard, Word was bruited about that this youngster with the velvet stroke would sure- ly chalk up more than one Open championship in his career.

It was hard to see how he could miss with the grooved, easy swing that varied not the slightest each time he employed It. Yet like many another player before and after him; who should have won, Smith failed. Sometimes he lost by the scartest of margins. This made his task all the harder for in addition to beating the rest of the field, Smith had to beat the mental bugaboo, a hazard as real and dangerous as any furrowed bunker guarding the green. The combination was a bit too much even Smith's streamlined swing to handle.
