SENSATIONAL UPSETS featured the Tenth Extra Race Meeting at the Valley on Saturday, a notable one be-Rong forward to pass Celtic Star and gra- ing the victory of Mr. L. Dunbar's Baffin Bay, a rank out- sider, in the Fremantle St. Leger.

It defeated the favourite, Triumphant Day, and was instrumental in paying out the second biggest dividend of the year-$410.30.

In the absence of Rose Emily, Avon (Mr. Black) was made favourite, with Humdrum Eve (Mr. Pih) next in demand. A fast pace was set, Humdrum Eve attempting to secure a big lead. Jennifer (Mr. Proulx) was in close attendance until the last quarter, when I gave up the fight,

LACKED STAYING POWER Cocklerol led' at the Rock, followed by Devonian, Triumphant. Day and Winfred. The first two ponies, however, tacked stay- ing power and were overhauled before the two mile post by Triumphant Day, with Winfred (Mr. Ph) length behind on the outside.

The race appeared to be petween these two ponies, but, to the surprise of all, Baffin Bay (Mr. Hearpa), which had not been in the picture hitherto, shot out from the field, near the mile post, and came through on the rails with a great burst of speed to overhaul the leaders and win by two lengths. Winfred was third.

A great race won by a great-hearted pony. The fourth race, the Paddock Handicap. which was contested by novice jockeys, on "E" class China ponies, resulted in yet an other upset.

Mr. H. M. Botelho, the most experienced jockey, was on 'Lucky Eleven and carried the bulk of the money.

Ол

Heddon (Mr. Treverton) and Palmer (Mr. Haymes) made the running. with Lucky Eleven and the others a few lengths behind. coming into the straight, however, Geordie (Mг. R. M. Wood) asserted itself magnificiently and romped home by a length. Sunshine Suśte (Mr. Chiu Ki Fan! was second, with Arabian Cat (Mr. Eyre) third.

ANOTHER FAVOURITE pišAPPOINTS The Norfolk Handicap (First Section), "Dally which was the first leg of the Double", resulted in the downfall of another favourite, Sunlight View (Mr. Pih) being strongly supported, but finishing second. Evidently the heavy weight of 168 lbs. was too great a handicap.

Zero (Mr. Treverton) took the lead, fol- lowed closely by Estover (Mr. Tang) with Sunlight View a couple of lengths in the

rear.

On rounding the bend Estover overtook Zero and Sunlight View came up strongly and, despite a spirited challenge by Mr. Pih on Sunlight View. Estover won by half a length with Gold Coin third, two lengths be hind.

Best finish of the afternoon was seen in the Sussex Handicap (Second Section) for "B" Class China ponies, in which Oak Bay, the favourite, was unplaced.

Oak Bay (Mr. Proulx), as usual, took an immediate lead, followed by Jober (Mr. Sung) and Potentate (Mr. Encarnacao).

On rounding the bend Mr. Proulx urged Oak Bay on to a still more substantial lead, which made it look a certain winner. To the consternation of the crowd, however, it was overhauled near the post by Mr. Sung who had begun to apply his whip to Jober. Meanwifile, Peaceful View (Mr. Pih) burst through on the outside to dead-heat with Jober for first place. Lancashire Lass (Mr. Chao) was a neck behind and finished very strongly,

In the second leg of the "Daily Double""; the Norfolk Handicap (Second Section) for "D" Class China pontes, backers had an other rude shock, as Smiling Time (Mr. Encarnacao),

hot a

favourite, finished nowhere.

IF HE HAD WON! Mr. L. B. Chao revealed sound judgment when he brought in The Leopard to win, and Mr. Y. T. Fung surprised punters by bringing Lancashire Chap into second place to pay $172,80.

If he had won, the pouple”? pool, amounting to $7,474, would have bad to be carried over to the next meeting. No one backed iti

Bressay (Mr. Hearne), which was third, finished very strongly, and fad it not started badly the result might have been different. The Leopard's win paid each of its 26 fortunate backers in the :Double"! $287.40,

In the last race of the day, the Queensland Handicap for "C" Class Australian panies, from the 15 mile post, Bredon, ridden by Mr. B. A. Proulx, was a big disappointment Heavily backed, it was unplaced.

Tarzan (Mr. Hoo Pak Ming), a novice rider, took an early lead, but, not able to maintain the pace. it faded out of the picture after rounding the bend.

It was here that Bredon asserted itself, and although:Mr. Proulx made a zrúnt-effort to win Bredon found the burden of 165 lbs. a little too severe.

In the meantime Mr. W. H. 8: Pavli gavÍ us a glimpse of his old riding form on Aus- tralian ponies, in' Iringing.
