It is noticed that Pinity, who is now the in the Association's pilot Central British Softball League, played one tilt less than Muddy's eight, so, in reality, the Crooner gets the nod as last year's heaviest shille lagh wielder. Hard hitting was not feature of either player's efforts, but their singles were stretched unobstrusively

that It is, however, on a subject badly needs clearing up-the unfor- tunate incident in the friendly hockey game on Saturday between Club de Recreio and the Diocesan Schoolgirls."

Women are funny creatures to deal with where their sport is. concerned- they take everything so terribly seri- ously, more especially criticism, how- ever well-intended.

and the fact that For that reason the case is sub judice I will confine comment on the present incident to a minimum.

In fairness to the schoolgirls, how- ever, I feel that it should be emphasis- ed that they did not, as reported, walk off the field. That much is certain and the seriousness of whatever charge - is brought against them must therefore be minimised to walk off any field of play for whatever reason is an un-

Official version of the incident as given me by the senior umpire is as follows:

Three members of the D.G.S. team were continually questioning the um-.

then decisions. They were pires'

I warned that if they made any further remarks they would be ordered off the field.

Almost immediately afterwards, the junior umpire blew D.G.S. up for. sticks. Mr. Gonsalves, the senior um- pire, then pointed out to the Recreio team the position from where the hit should be taken.

The captain of the D.G.S. team is then alleged to have said to members of the opposing team: "You might as well go up as far as the goal-posts."

Mr. Gonsalves then ordered her off the fleld.

She was then alleged to have re- plied: "Why should I, I was only tell- ing my girls where to stand!".

On this the Recreio captain refused to continue and the D.G.S. captain then remarked: "we might as well call the game off:”

off the

Both teams then walked field.

MEMBERS of the D.G.S. team, asked

for their version, emphasise that their captain, when ordered off the field, was in fact doing no more than issuing instructions to the team..

They find it difficult to reconcile the action of Mr. Gonsalves in this in- stance, with the fact that throughout the game he acted in the duel capacity of umpire and coach and on several occasions during the game, play was held up whilst he told the Recreio girls what to do and how to do it.

They appreciate the fact that Mr. Gonsalves, on the appointed, umpire failing to make an appearance, very sportingly, agreed to umpire himself but feel that having accepted: that res- ponsibility, he should have forgotten the fact that he was the Recreio coach.

Mr. Gonsalves, I am informed, has already made a report to the Umpires" Association, and, it is understood, that body will in turn submit their findings to Hong Kong Ladies' Hockey Asso- ciation.
