THE CHINA MAIL, OCTOBER 28, 1939

POPPY DAY 1939

It will be recalled that several days ago the announcement was made in London that all schemes previously adopted for the British Legion Fund had been devoted to the assistance of participants in the last war, but that now these schemes will be for those in any war, including the present.

Since the Poppy Day Fund was' in- augurated in 1921, more than £7,500,- 000. has been collected and the amount raised last year amounted to £578,000. It is hoped, that owing to the added burden necessitated by the present conflict, the Colony's contribution will be as generous as possible.

It is announced that His Majesty, The King has sent a donation of £100. to the Poppy Day Fund Appeal in London, and His Excellency, The Go- vernor has opened the Colony's con- tribution with a donation of $100.

The street sales of Poppies this year will be held on November 10th instead of November 11th so as to afford all members of the public a convenient opportunity of contributing which otherwise they might not have owing to Armistice Day being a holiday.

In the absence of any formal cere- mony at the Cenotaph, wreaths may be laid privately, and the public are advised that Flanders Poppies will be on sale through the British Legion for those desiring to lay Poppy Wreaths.

Contributions to date: His Excellency,

Melvyn Douglas and Joan Blon- dell are co-starred at the King's Theatre in Columbia's “Good Girls Go to Paris," Douglas is seen as a college professor and unwilling a young confidential adviser to
