A FAIR CROWD attended the Ninth Extra Race Meet- ing on Saturday, which was conducted under ideal weather conditions.

Beyond Mr. Sung's unfortunate mishap when he was thrown by King Kong, and the refusal of Happy Landings to take part in a race, there were no untoward incidents.

The meeting was marked by clever which was regarded as the main event, re- riding on the part of Mr. C. Encar- sulted in an upset, Rose Emily (Mr. En- carnacao), winning. The public placed its nacao, champion fockey, who, with confidence in Liliber (Mr. Sung), and its Mr. Needa, practically monopolised the defeat can be attributed only to the fact day's winners.

POLICE DISAPPOINT

(By "SCRUM HALF") Police Rugby supporters could not have been satisfied with their team's display against a scratch Army team yesterday at Sookunooo in a game that was more of a practice in preparation for this evening's game against Club "A" at the Valley.

Handicapped by late arrivals and the non- appearance of several players Police plaved Riddell, their coach, at serum-half in the first half and also had the services of Hughes, Foley and Bevan of Army. In the first half they were at aixes and sevens but the arrival of Luscombe and Jenner put new life into the side, and they offered bet ter opposition to a team who had already

secured the whip hand.

Wall played excellently at full-back and is probably the best in the Colony at the moment. Luscombe, showed he is a very dangerous scrum-half, being quick to seize the slightest opportunity. Wilson was good in spasms and Taylor was dangerous in possession, though he was always closely marked. He did not get the ball very often and it might be to the advantage of Police if they played him as a centre threequarter. Heath was a trifle slow at threequarter and is badly needed in the pack, where there is no leader. Cuilinan. Searle and Jenner- the latter in the lineouts-were the only Police forwards to catch the eve.

Coming into the straight, Hectic View passed Rose Emily at the two mile post.. but not long after the latter once again took the lead. Despite determined riding by Mr. Pih. Hectia View could not gain on the leader and had to remain satisfied with being second, with Galaxy, third, a neck

behind.

and it was never seriously challenged.

BY BEST BALL

The Wethereds have long been one of England's major golfing families. Roger's sister, Joyce Wethered possessed "the most perfect swing in the world," ac- cording to Bobby Jones, whose own swing wasn't so hard on the eyes. Roger Wethered's play with the longer and shorter irons left nothing to be desired in the way of skill and finesse. His heavy irons were long and ac- curate, the more lofted ones well controlled and precise. It was only on the tee that he had dif- ficulty. Had he possessed con- trol and, length here, he would have been more than a match for anyone; was the opinion of Jones after observing him play.

As a cure for his ailment, somebody made a gift of a flexi- ble shafted driver to Wethered. Immediately his tee shots show- ed improvement. True some sailed so far to the right that they landed on the adjoining fair- way but on the whole the impro- vement was remarkable: Possibly the moral of this is; if at first you don't succeed, try try another driver.

It was in this race that Mr. Sung, on King Kong, second favourite, was thrown near the half mile post. Luckily his injur tes were not of a serious nature, although

he did not ride again.

In the Mullah Nullah Handicap for "B" Class - Australian ponies, Chiltern, nicely handled by Mr. Encarnacao, scored another triumph for this rider, who thus rode three winners in succession.

Happy Landings (Mr. Davis) was favour ite, but its refusal to start on the rise of the barrier was a great disappointment. Mr. Davis had to return the pony to the stable.

Coming into the straight it looked as if the race would be fought out between A Grand Time, near the rails, and Winfred (Mr. Pih) on the outside. About 50 yards from the post, however, Mr. Encarnacao came through on Chiltern, riding between the two ponies and snatching a grand vie
