BRITAIN'S TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH NEUTRALS

London, To-day. BELGIUM, NORWAY, Sweden and Latvia are among the neutral countries with whom Britain is now in conversation för the purpose of regu- lating trade under war conditions.

The discussions are proceeding very smoothly, and the countries concerned show a genuine desire to co-operate..

Discussions for increasing trade are also in progress

with Soviet Russia.

Britain, of course, fears that goods sold to Russia might be re-sold to Germany, and it is believed that the Russians appreciate this point and will ask only for goods they need for their own use.

The effect of the war on trade in some sections is shown by the Scan- dinavian coal figures. British exports of coal to Norway and Sweden have increased by 150 per cent. and to Denmark by. 125 per cent.

Observers here comment that it does not appear that the Ger. mans are getting any great ad- vantages from their self-pro.. claimed "command of the North Sea."

"While they have been talking, we have been trading!" is a typical com-

· ment. ·

Great difficulties are reported in Germany in maintaining the quality of exports and even of fulfilling or ders. And Hitler himself has said:- "We must export, or we die."--Reuter.

NAZI COMMENT

Berlin, To-day. The official Nazi newspaper "Voel- 'kischer Beobachter" reflects the Ger- man attitude to the pouring of cold water by the Scadinavian countries on the German propsoal that. they should abandon trading with Britain and deal exclusively with Germany.

The "Voelkischer Beobachter" attackes the Nordic bloc for re- fusing the proposal and, indeed, attacks their policy of neutrality In general.

Neutral countries, it complains, use different yard-sticks when judging the "relative value of Allied and Ger- man news reports.”—Reuter.

BRITISH RIPOSTE

London, To-day. Semi-official circles here, comment- ing on the "Voelkische Beobachter's" complaint that different yard-sticks are used by the Nordic countries to assess Allied and German news re- ports, say:-

"The 'Voelkische Beobachter' seems to forget that the taller the lie the longer the yard-stick needed!"-Reu- ter,

110 WAR PRISONERS

London, To-day..

It was stated in the House of Lords yesterday that 110, German sailors and airmen are interned as prisoners of war in Britain.

As there are only an insignificant number of British airmen prisoners in Germany, no question of an ex- change of prisoners so far arises. British Wireless.
