CHINESE CHAMBER AND INCOME TAX PROPOSALS

ONLY ONE MEMBER, Mr. Yeung Man-fei, spoke in favour of the proposed Income Tax at yester- day's special conference of the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, sum- moned to discuss the question last night. The majority of the members opposed the proposal, but sympathised with the Hong Kong Govern- ment's decision to raise revenue in connection with the War.

The Chinese Chamber of Commerce, though opposed to Income Tax which, it was argued, would have à detri- mentral effect on the Colony's trade and industrial enterprises, were, how- ever, not opposed to other forms of assessment.

Mr. Yeung approved the imposition of Income Tax, stating that it was the best and most reasonable and just method of raising new revenue.

COMMITTEE FORMED

A special committee of 13 members, headed by Mr. Philip Gockchin, who presided over the meeting, was form- ed to convey the Chamber's sentiments to the Government.

A meeting will be held this after- noon by the Committee.
