A four-storeyed building Pottinger Street near the Central Police Station was internally gutted by fire which broke out 3.15 p.m. to-day.

The fire started on the ground floor of No. 37, used as a black- smith's shop, and in a matter of minutes had spread to the top floor.

Flames and smoke were pour- ing out by the time the first three fire engines had arrived on the scene.

Two fire appliances attacked the the outbreak from opposite Central Police Station and the other from the junction in Well- ington Street.

The later was joined at 3.30 by another engine, as the flames started spreading to the adjoining buildings, causing the inmates to hurriedly rush out with as many of their belongings as they could. The firemen had the fire under control by 3.35 p.m.

Members of the Auxilary Fire service also assisted in bringing the outbreak under control.

There were no casualties, but a number of people received slight injuries in their attempt to leave the burning building.

Representatives of the Shang- hai Taxicab Company, the

Star Taxicab.Company, and the Cen- tral Taxicab Company, met this morning to discuss an agreed re- vised scale of plans for increas- ing" fares to take effect when ap- proved by Government..

It is understood that it is pro- posed to increase the rate per mile to 50 cents.

A line of framcars was held up near the Hong-Kong Cricket Club ground at tiffin time as the result of an accident. A kar turning into Murray Road, collid- ed with a tram and the two vehicles were so inter-locked tem- porarily that it was some time before the traffic line could be cleared.

Chinese guerillas are reported to have occupied Ting Tong Wel, on the Kowloon-Canton Line, according to vernacular messages this afternoon.
