Observer with the Royal Air chromesh and many other fine car Force in France.

The Messerschmidts, he says, have not proved to be very successful. In an attack on half the num- ber of French machines, the Germans lost two 'planes and shot down none; the battle lasted for about 15 minutes.

The battle provided the first radio running commentary on an aerial battle ever given from the air and from the very heart of the fight.

It so happened that a French flier left his communications microphone switched on and at headquarters a small group

of officers heard him talking to him-` self.

It appears that a flight of Curtiss machines, flying the colours of France, were on patrol. They were suddenly greeted with one burst of Nazi anti-aircraft fire, obvious- ly intended as a guide to Ger. man fighters.

Six Messerschmidts came to the attack. There was a short fight, as a result of which one German made a forced landing. The others made

KING VISITS THE

BALLOON

BARRAGE UNITS

London, To-day. Their Majesties the King and Queen visited balloon barrage units yesterday.

The Queen showed great in- terest in the arrangements for car- rying hot food to men in distant out- posts, while the King asked what the men were in civilian life. He was told they ranged all the way. from barristers to mechanics and artisans.

TERRIFIC MELEE

Eight of the French machines con- tinued their patrol, the ninth having to return to his base owing to ă shortage of petrol.

A few minutes later, three flights of five each of the much-vaunted Richthofen Squadron, in Messersch- midts, came up.

For quarter of an hour, there was a terrific melee in the air, with planes and bullets apparently everywhere.

The French, who were well over Germany at the time, edged them. selves towards our lines and even- tually drew the Germans

over French territory.

Two Messerschmidts fell behind the French lines. The others then made off.

MANOEUVRABILITY

When the French 'planes landed, it was found that although most of the machines bore bullet holes, no one was hurt and that while the Mes-
