TWO BIG BRITISH VESSELS SUNK IN ATLANTIC

TWO BRITISH SHIPS were sunk in the Atlantic yes- terday, the 10,000-ton Yorkshire and the 7,000- ton City of Mandalay, by a U-boat. The United States Maritime Commission announces that the 300 survivors of both ships have been picked up by the American ship Independence Hall.

The Yorkshire, which is owned by the Bibby Steamship Co., was a ves- sel of 10,184 tons gross and 4,206 tons net. Built by Harland Wolf at Belfast in 1920, she was powered by four steam turbines and was 482 feet long, with a breadth of 58 feet and a depth of 40 feet.

Owned by the Ellerman Lines, Ltd., the City of Mandalay was a vessel of 7,049 tons gross and. 4.511 net. Built by Swan. Hunter Wigham Richardson at Newcastle in 1925, she was 443 feet long, with a breadth of 58 feet and a depth 32 feet.

500 MILES OFF THE FRENCH COAST

Washington, To-day. Three hundred survivors from the Ellerman Line vessel City of Mandalay and the s.s. Yorkshire have been pick- ed up in mid-Atlantic by the United States steamer Independence Hall. whose master sent a wireless message to the United States Martime Com- mission reporting the rescue.

The Independence Hall was on the way from Bordeaux and re- ported her position at the time as being 500 miles from the French coast.
