DARING GERMAN EXPLOIT FAILS AT HIGH COST
TWO BRITISH NAVAL OFFICERS AND THIRTEEN MEN WERE KILL- ED IN YESTERDAY'S BOMBING ATTACK ON UNITS OF THE FLEET AT ROSYTH, IT IS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED.
In addition, twelve officers and men were seriously injured by bomb splin-
ters. Others were slightly injured.
In its main objective, however, the German air attack failed completely. No British warship received more than superficial damage, though H.M.S. Southampton had a narrow escape.
At the same time, although the exact number of 22 U-BOATS
German losses is not officially stated, official reports suggest that at least six German bombers were shot down by anti-aircraft fire or by R.A.F. planes.
One German plane crashed in flames in the Pentland Hills,
eight miles south of Edinburgh.

The German attack was concentrat- ed, primarily, upon the British sub- sidiary naval base at Rosyth, which is on the Fifeshire side of the Forth about eleven miles to the W.N.W. of Edinburgh.
The air battles between R.A.F. squadrons and the invading machines, however, ranged across Edinburghshire and Fifeshire, and over the Firth of Forth right out to sea.
