SIEGFRIED LINE

A FORMIDABLE OBSTACLE

The slow and methodical advance of the French armies into Germany, when compared with the rapid and crush- ing advance of the German armies in Poland, seems to have caused a certain amount of disappointment among, the non-military-minded public.

In actual fact, the two operations have nothing in com- mon. The German invasion of Poland was made through wide open country, without any permanent lines of de- fence, and was made from several directions simultaneous- ly.

In order to get into Germany, the Allies have either to force a crossing of the Rhine in face of permanent defence works or to break through the system of fortifications, call- ed "The Siegfried Line,” on the sector which runs for a hun- dred miles through mountainous country between the Rhine and the Moselle.
