JAPANESE DRAW A VEIL

from

Macao, To-day. After three hours of bitter fighting in the suburbs of! Shek-ki, the Japanese com- pleted occupation of the Chungshan District capital itiated on the North Hunan front, the at ten o'clock last night.

A Japanese contingent, driving to- wards Shekki from the South-East, cut communications between Shekki and Macao at about four o'clock yes- terday afternoon and by seven p.m., the Japanese who attacked Shekki from three directions were hotly engaged in the outskirts.

The Japanese advance was covered by the biggest concentration of air- craft ever put in in the Chungshan District, and the Chinese defenders were severely bombed throughout the day and early evening.

In spite of the enveloping attack developed by the Japanese, the Chin- ese defenders fought a magnificent rear-guard action against the troops advancing from the north-east, en- abling the main body of the Chinese defenders to withdraw intact towards the north-west.--Our Own Correspon- dent.
