COMMENTING ON THE sinking of the Clement, a naval expert said that the popping-up of the armed raider in the South Atlantic was no sur- prise to the British Navy.
What was a surprise was the fact that four weeks had elapsed since the outbreak of war and its first appearance.
Whether it
was a warship or an armed merchantman is not revealed, but it is thought that it may well be a merchantman which put out to sea before war broke out with its decks already strengthened and with its guns hidden secretly in the hold.
The British Navy, however, has made plans well ahead and air. craft provide a far-seeing eye.
