THE WAR WILL END---

When Hitler Has Had Enough By Allied Standards

VIGOROUS CHURCHILL

REPLY TO THE NEW NAZI "PEACE OFFENSIVE"

London, To-day.

MR. WINSTON CHURCHILL, the First Lord of the Admiralty, in a broad- cast to the nation last night, made a vigorous reply to Hitler's peace offensive.

Mr. Churchill said that although the war had begun when Hitler wanted it to, it would only end when we were sure he had had enough.

Our reluctance to fight, said Mr. Churchill, had been mock- ed at as cowardice. Now the war was begun, it was begun, and with the help of God we were going on to the end.

Final victory would depend on how long Hitler and the men around him, their hands stained with blood and sticky with corruption, could control Germany.

Summing-up the results of the first month of the

Mr. war,

Winston Churchill said that Poland had been over-run, but would rise again; Russla had warned Hitler off his Eastern dream; and the U-boats might be safely left to the care and constant attention of the British Navy.

SOUL INDESTRUCTIBLE

Dealing at the outset with "Poland, Mr. Churchill said that that country had again been overrun by two great Powers which had held her in bon-

dage for 150 years but were unable to conquer the spirit of the nation.

Polish

The heroic defence of Warsaw shows that the soul of Poland is rise indestructible and she will again like a rock which may for a spell be submerged by a tidal wave but which remains a rock.

Russia had pursued a policy of self-interest. We could have wished that the Russian Armies should be standing on their present line as friends and allies of Poland, instead of invaders, but that the Russian, ar- mies should stand on this line was clearly necessary for the safety of Russia against the Nazi 'menace.

LINE IS THERE

At any rate, the line is there and

created which Nazi Germany does not dare to assail.

Hitler and all that Hitler stands for have been and are being warned off south-east Europe.

U-BOAT CAMPAIGN

"The third event is that the U-boat attack on the life of the British Isles has hitherto not proved successful.

"It is true that when they sprang on us and we were going on our or- dinary business with 2,000 ships on the seas they managed to do serious damage, but the Navy immediately attacked the U-boats and is hunting them night and day with zeal, and not altogether without relish!

"It looks very much as if the U-boats were feeling the weather! A week has passed since a British ship alone or in convoy has been aunk or evan molested on the high seas by ́à U-boat and during. the month we captured by Con- traband Control 150,000 tons more German merchandise for our own benefit that we lost by ́all the U-boat sinkings put' ogether!

"Every day we are attacking U-boats. Some of them now prefer to go and sink unprotected neutral ships of Norway and Sweden.

"We must expect that the U-boat attack on the sea-borne commerce of the world will be renewed presently on a greater acale, We hope, however, by the end of October we shall have 'thrice the hunting-craft working ns. we had at the beginning of the war.

"We hope that "our means of putting down this past will grow continually and that the U-boats may safely be left to the care and constant attention of the British Navy."!
