44 Dbl. The fact that you know you can make game or even five-odd in hearts yourself is of little value if the op- ponents at the same time

five can make spades against you. However, in today's hand North managed to convince the oppon- ents that he was de- 'fending desperately not bidding something he was sure could be made. South's two-heart overcall. was slightly under a normal minimum if anything, and West's raise to two spades was not particularly good. Now North, looking at his tremendous hand, realized that he and his partner could make five hearts easily. At the same time it was apparent to him that the opponents held both black Ace and that his side could not expect to make as many spades as his aide could make hearts. Accordingly, he made the brilliant bid of "Pass," at the same time holiling his breath, for fear that East would also pass. However, East's hand was entirely too strong, and he jumped to four spades. Then when the bidding came around to North, he went to five hearts.

East, with his two Ace-Kings, dou- bled like a shot. It looked like a good set. While West with his hand sus- pected that the penalty would not be much, at the same time he did not like to go on to five spades with only two Queens.

The Queen of spades was opened. East overtook and cashed the King of clubs, whereupon Declarer spread his hand for the balance of the tricks, making five-odd doubled. If North had not trapped the opponents, East and West would undoubtedly have bid five spades, and North would have been forced to really sacrifice at six hearts. As it was, he had stolen the

game.

You were the dealer yesterday. Neither side was vulnerable and you held:

A X

♡ AIX ◊ x x

AA KIX X X * What do you bid? ANSWER: Your correct opening bid is one club. A great many players have the bad habit of opening such a hand with three clubs. If the op- ponents really have a good spade or diamond hand, a three-club-bid this situation will not shut them out. Contrariwise, if your partner has a good hand, the three-club bid is likely

to cost you a Slam.
