WAR WIDOW'S

SON EXEMPT

Contending that the State played "a dirty trick" in refusing his war- widowed mother a pension, John Jones, 20, motor mechanic, of Tre- forest, Glam, told the South Wales tribunal at Cardiff that he refused to join the Militia or do any national service.

The tribunal, over which Judge Frank Davies presided, decided that he should be registered without con- dition in the list of conscientious ob- jectors. . -

"My father lost his life in the war to end war," said Jones. "Why should I start where he left off, and set the war machine going again?"

Judge Davies: Are you willing to do civilian work?-No. The State was not willing to help me and my mother when we wanted help, and so I will not help the State now.

He added that he had no religious objections.

GRUDGE AGAINST STATE

or

A member of the tribunal asked him whether it was not a grudge resentment against the State, rather than a conscientious objection, which made him oppose service.

"This grudge plays on your con- science whenever you think about it," he retorted.

Denver Jones, 20, a colliery labour- er, of Tonyrefail, who described him- self as a child of God, was exempted from any form of national service.

He stated that he was a member of the Pentecostal Full Gospel Mission, and added: "If I am to be made sub-BC 20111-La Cumparsita ject to the State I cannot remain sub- ject to the will of God."

A member of the tribunal asked. whether this attitude was compatible with accepting sickness assurances from the State.

"Yes, but I pay for that," Denver Jones replied.

Asked whether he appreciated that he had certain duties to his fellow- citizens, and that there was nothing wrong in being a good citizen, he re- peated that in. no circumstances would The.assist in national service.
