WINDFALL FOR MILITIAMAN

Ration allowance "windfalls" at the rate of about £300 per 1,000 militia- men are now being received by officers commanding Militia training, units in all parts of the country.

These extra amounts represent ac- cumulated ration funds due to the in- crease of messing allowance, as from July 16, officially announced on Aug.

3.

The funds will be expended by com- manding officers at their discretion, but it is insisted that the expenditure shall be on food.

The C. O. of a typical Militia train- ing centre, Col. J. V. Westrupp, at Harrogate Militia Camp, said: "I have received the notification, but the money has not arrived yet.

"My view is that some of it will be spent on food luxuries. The men here are getting plenty of food and must be putting on weight. I do not know yet what the‘luxuries will be."

It was stated at the War Office that the age of 20 was recognised as the heaviest eating age in the Army. Re- ports now being received showed that recruits were putting on weight up to 7lb in the first week of military. training, especially in the North of England camps.

The ration allowance would gradual- ly be reduced to the normal because it was found that when the recruits set- tled down to routine, the normal rations were adequate.

WAR RECORD HELPS MOTORIST

Frederick Robert Outhwaite, 41, an engineer, of Warwick-gardens. Ken- Feltham sington, pleaded guilty at

to driving a car while under the in- fluence of drink at 9.30 p.m. on Aug. 11 at Great South-West-road, Bed- front.

Mrs. Lloyd Lane, his counsel, said that on the day preceding the offence Outhwaite went to Devonshire and sustained injuries to his

head, and two drinks he had while driving back affected him.

Outhwaite, said Mrs. Lloyd Lane, joined the Nazy as a boy. For gallan- try at Zeebrugge he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and given 'command of a submarine chaser. On Aug. 11, 1918, he fought single-hand- ed a battle against four German 'planes for five hours in the North Sea, until the ship was burned under him and he was taken prisoner,

Mrs. Lane added that this car in- cident happened on the anniversary of what was the most terrible day of his life. Outhwaite was noW·· contact officer between contractors engaged on production for national defence; and he was shortly to be taken back on the technical side of the naval reserve.

The Bench discharged Outhwaite under the First Offenders Act on pay- ment of £20 costs.

The following citations will also be read from the Christian Science Text- book, "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker.
