NAZI DESTROYER BLOWN UP BY ITS OWN MINE
London, To-day.
A GERMAN DESTROYER has been blown up by one of its own mines south of the Sound, says a Co- penhagen report. The Sound separates Den- mark and Sweden.
Watchers on the Swedish shore saw a ship. They heard a tremendous explosion, accompanied by a column of water which shot high into the air, after which the ship disappeared.

General Smuts, the new South African Premier, has addressed a special message. to the people in which he says that Parliament has de- cided to take part in the war in the interests of South Africa.
He déclared that the decision had been reached because it was certain that if Hitler were allowed to succeed' in aggression in Europe, it would not be long before there came the demand for the return of South-West Africa: to the Reich.

This, he says, is not an occasion to make a display of separateness from the British Commonwealth, which is South Africa's best friend in a dan-
gerous world.
