FRENCH CLAIM CAPTURE OF ZWEIBRUCKEN
Paris, To-day.
CAPTURE OF ZWEIBRUCKEN, an important Ger- man railway junction some fourteen miles to the east of Saarbrucken, is claimed in French press despatches from the Western Front.
This seems to be partially confirmed by an official communique which states that substantial pro- gress was made in a sustained attack on a 12- mile front to the east of Saarbrucken. According to the reports, the attack followed a heavy artillery bombard- ment of the whole area, and was led by a large number of fanks which ad- vanced rapidly under the cover of ar- tillery fire.
The French claim to have pene- trated the German defences to an average depth of two miles.
The fighting is rapidly becoming extended in scope and severity and appears now to have left the prelim- inary stage of contact and is entering on the phase of conflict,
GERMAN ATTACKS DRIVEN OFF German endeavours to raise French pressure on the Saarbrucken sector by an offensive near the Luxembourg border have failed. All German at- tacks have been driven back.
Heavy fighting is predicted in the next few days as fresh German troops are pouring into the lines and
they appear to be determined to hold their outposts as long as possible.--Reuter. AERODROME BOMBED
London, To-day. The Germans claim that the French have bombed the evacuated aerodrome of Saarbruecken.
A British United Press message says that German counter-attacks on the French left wing on a 5-mile line from the Luxemburg border were ef- fectively held during Sunday night.-- Reuter.
SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS Further progress is being made by the French. A communique issued late last night by the French High Command reads:----
"Despite the resistance of the enemy, our attacks have continued to make substantial progress on a front 12 miles east of the Saar.”--Reuter.
