BRITAIN WILL SEEK TO MAINTAIN EXPORTS

Mr. Oliver Stanley, President of the Board of Trade, stated in the House of Commons yesterday that it was of vital importance to the country to maintain exports and to give priority to certain exports.
Mr. Stanley was replying to Sir Percy Harris (Liberal), who enquir- ed whether merchants and manufac- turers would be encouraged to main- tain exports so that the country could pay for imports.---Reuter.

PETITION TO THE GOVERNOR
The Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce decided at a meeting yesterday to petition the Hongkong Government to authorize the resumption of telegraphic mes- sages in Chinese.
Under the recent emergency govern- ment order, all messages must be in either English or French.
The Chamber will point to the in- convenience incurred in sending mess- ages in English or French to Chinese in the interior.-Central merchants News.

The Hon. Colonial Secretary this afternoon informed the "China Mail" that he knew noth- ing to justify a rumour that a Tribunal is to be set up to con- sider individual appeals by those interned at La Salle College.
The "China Mail" this after- noon learns that the s.s. Empress of Japan has left Shanghài for Kobe, proceeding on her journey to America with all. passengers who boarded in Hong Kong last Friday.
It will be recalled that the ves- sel was held up on British naval orders at Shanghai.
