HOW HONG KONG REACTED TO THE WAR DECLARATION

ALTHOUGH HONG KONG last night received the news of Great Britain's declaration of war on Germany without much manifestation of feeling, other than a sense of profound relief, there was some celebration of the momentous event in the hotels.

.

Several parties gathered in the "Gripps" until late

at night; singing patriotic songs. Total strang-i ers greeted one another and made up impromp- tu gatherings in the various bars.

U.S. TO INVOKE NEUTRALITY ACT

Washington, To-day. -

It is announced that a White House proclamation is being drawn up to in- voke the Neutrality Act.- Reuter.

Britons, French and Americans join- ed each other in singing the respec- tive National Anthems and drinking- to the "damnation of Hitler" and the speedy and victorious conclusion of the war.

In King's Park occurred the only open sign of anti-Nazi feel. ing, the swastika flag on the Gar- man clubhouse being torn down and publicly burned.

The rounding-up and internment of local Germans was carried out metho- dically and with a complete lack of friction by the Hong Kong Police, the measures being initiated directly Bri- tain's declaration of war was made known.

Germian property, including the German Club (where an inventory

was taken of all drinks on the pre- mises) has been sealed by the Police.
