WEAK BRITISH NINE DEFEATS PORTUGAL
(By "GRANDSTAND”)
TO THE SURPRISE OF fans and players alike, a well- organized Portuguese team was eliminated by Great Bri- tain, 16-3, in the opening game of the International ser- ies for the Mamak Shield last Saturday afternoon.

Great Britain who batted first were blanked in the first inning, but Por- tugal, at their turn to bat, garnered three runs which turned to be their only tallies during the encounter.
The game proved to be a pitchers' contest, both hurlers allowing but four hits each.
Remedios & B. Basto In Semi-Final Round
THOUGH THE Quarter Final games of the Open Sin- gles Lawn Bowls Championship were not as closely con- tested as anticipated, there were, nevertheless, two games which were well worth watching.
At Club de Recreio, U. M. Omar equalled J. C. Brown's record of last year when he defeated H. White by 21-1 after 12 heads during which only four singles were scored.
M. R. Abbas went down to C. F. Remedios after a good fight, a four on the 15th head marking the turning point of the game.
The second Indian Recreation Club player to exit was A. R. Minu, who put up a surprisingly poor fight against Basto, to lose by 21-8 and scoring on only five of the 17 heads.
DALLAH'S STRONG FINISH Running neck to neck for the great- er distance of the game A. R. Dallah entered the Semi-Final Round when he beat G. Perkins 21-15 on the 23rd head.
..
Though Perkins fell off somewhat in the closing stages, of the game, good bowls was nevertheless witnessed in this encounter and up to the 14th head always held a slight advantage over his Sookunpoo opponent.
Both players played good bowls and with the exception of one or two heads, the players were forced to give their best to get the shot.
There was a total absence of driv-
ing and both players had to continual ly draw for the shot. There also very few lucky wicks.

LONG AND SHORT HEADS Dallah favoured the long heads while Perkins resorted to medium or shot ones when ever he had a chance, but this was no advantage to either, as both players adapted themselves ad- mirably to either short or long heads.
Perkins opened the scoring with a brace to which Dallah replied with a single and at the seventh head was leading by 8 shots to 4, but Perkins scored on the three on the next two heads to take the lead at 7-6.
