SITUATION EXTREMELY GRAVE: PEACE OR WAR DEPENDS UPON HERR HITLER

TO-DAY'S SITTING OF PARLIAMENT

London, To-day. To-day's session of the House of Commons will prob- ably be only of short dura- tion.

The sitting is not expected to last more than an hour, during which Mr. Chamberlain will make a statement on the British reply to Hitler.

The Opposition leaders are said to have agrood

formal state-

London, To-day.

IT IS NOW IMPROBABLE that the text of Hitler's message and the British reply, which Sir Nevile Henderson is taking back to Berlin, will be issued before the Prime Minister and Lord Halifax ad- dress Parliament this afternoon.

There appears to be a desire in London to give Hitler the fullest opportunity to study the British reply before it is published.

Not the slightest inkling is yet available about the nature of the British reply, but Reuter learns that although the situation is extremely grave the door has not yet been entirely closed upon the possibility of a peaceful settlement.

It is not impossible, however, that the House of Commons programme will be changed. if Germany's reply is received before the House convenes.

NOT HOPELESS

Considerable interest is evidenced in the meeting between the Foreign Secretary and the Japanese Ambas- sador, during which Lord Halifax is

reported to have said that he does not yet consider the European situation

as hopeless.-Trans-Ocean.
